OWB Kydex Holster Buying Guide: Retention, Ride Height, and Comfort

If you're shopping for an OWB kydex holster, you've probably already realized there's way more to it than just picking something that fits your gun. Retention, ride height, cant angle, comfort: these aren't just buzzwords. They're the difference between a holster you'll actually wear every day and one that sits in a drawer collecting dust.

We build these holsters every single day here at Valley Tacticians, and we've learned what actually matters to people who carry outside the waistband. Whether you're running a duty belt, open carrying, or just want the most secure setup for range days, this guide breaks down exactly what you need to know.

Understanding Retention in OWB Kydex Holsters

Retention is how tightly your holster grips your firearm. It's not just about keeping the gun from falling out: it's about finding that sweet spot between security and accessibility.

Most OWB kydex holsters use adjustable passive retention. That means there are retention screws (usually near the trigger guard area) that you can tighten or loosen to change how much resistance you feel when you draw. We set ours at a comfortable middle ground when they ship, but everyone's different. Some folks want a really snug fit where they have to give it a firm tug. Others prefer a smoother, faster draw with less resistance.

The beauty of adjustable retention is you can change it as you go. New holster? Might be tight at first. After a few hundred draws, the Kydex settles in and you might want to tweak those screws a quarter turn. It's YOUR holster: dial it in exactly how you like it.

One thing we tell people: NEVER crank those screws down as tight as they'll go. You're not trying to create a permanent bond between gun and holster. Just enough resistance that the gun won't come loose on its own, but you can still draw smoothly when you need to.

Level 2 Retention: When You Need It

Now, if passive retention isn't enough: maybe you're in law enforcement, work security, or just want that extra layer of security for open carry: that's where level 2 retention holsters come in.

Level 2 means there's an active retention device in addition to the passive friction fit. We're talking about things like SLS (Self Locking System) hoods or Talon retention hoods. These require a deliberate action to release the firearm: usually rotating a hood forward or pressing a lever: before you can draw.

Here's the thing about Level 2 systems: they're not for everyone, and that's okay. They add bulk. They require training to use efficiently. But if you're in a role where weapon retention during a struggle is a real concern, or if you're carrying openly in public and want that peace of mind, Level 2 makes total sense.

We build custom kydex holsters with Level 2 retention systems when folks need them, and we can walk you through which system works best for your specific firearm and carry situation. The key is being honest about your actual needs versus what looks tactical.

Ride Height and Cant Adjustment

Ride height is simple: it's how high or low your holster sits on your belt. Most OWB setups give you three positions depending on your mounting hardware. Higher ride height means the gun sits closer to your natural draw position but might print more if you're trying to conceal under a jacket. Lower ride height tucks it down better but changes your draw angle.

Cant is the forward or backward tilt of the holster. Most quality OWB kydex holsters let you adjust cant anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees in either direction. A forward cant (FBI cant) can make the draw more natural and help conceal the grip under a cover garment. Straight vertical works great for duty carry or when you're not worried about concealment.

We typically ship our holsters with a slight forward cant because that's what most people prefer, but again: it's adjustable. Spend some time experimenting with different positions. Your body type, how you move, what you're wearing... it all affects what feels right. There's no universal "correct" setting here.

Comfort Considerations for All-Day Carry

Let's be real: if your holster isn't comfortable, you won't wear it. Period.

Kydex can feel rigid, especially if you're used to leather or hybrid setups. That stiffness is actually what gives it precision and security, but it also means the holster isn't going to flex and conform to your body the way leather does. That said, a properly made custom kydex holster is designed to distribute weight evenly and minimize hot spots.

Here's what actually affects comfort in OWB carry:

Belt attachment matters. We use quality hardware that spreads the load across multiple points of contact. Cheap clips or single-point attachments will dig into your side after an hour or two.

Weight distribution is everything. A full-size 1911 in an OWB holster is going to feel heavier than a compact Glock, obviously, but how that weight sits on your belt makes a huge difference. Proper ride height and cant adjustment help balance things out.

The edges count. Our holsters have smooth, rounded edges where they contact your body. You shouldn't feel any sharp corners digging in, even if you're wearing the holster against bare skin under a tucked shirt (though we don't recommend that for OWB carry).

Sweat shields are optional but helpful. We can add a sweat guard to keep your slide off your body. Some folks love them, others find them unnecessary for OWB. It just depends on how close the holster rides and how much you sweat.

If pure Kydex comfort is a concern, hybrid options exist that combine Kydex shells with leather or synthetic backing. We focus on pure Kydex because it's more durable and easier to maintain, but we're honest about the trade-offs.

Why Custom Matters

You'll see plenty of "universal fit" or "close enough" holsters out there. We don't make those, and here's why: your holster needs to fit your EXACT gun model to work correctly.

A Glock 19 holster will not properly fit a Glock 19X, even though they're close. A Sig P320 Compact is different from a P320 Carry. Getting the fit wrong means either the retention is off, the trigger guard isn't fully covered, or the gun rattles around in there. None of those are acceptable.

When we say custom kydex holster, we mean it's formed specifically for your firearm model. We've got molds for hundreds of different guns, and we hand-form each holster to ensure the fit is precise. You tell us what you're carrying, and we build the holster around it.

Beyond the fit, custom also means choice. Want arctic camo Kydex? We can do that. Carbon fiber pattern? Got it. Olive drab, flat black, or something completely wild? All possible. Want to adjust the retention screws placement, add threaded inserts for modularity, or specify exactly how much sweat guard you want? We'll build it that way.

What Makes Valley Tacticians Different

We're a veteran-owned, family-operated shop, and we handcraft every single holster right here in the USA. That's not marketing fluff: that's just how we do things.

When you order from us, you're getting something built by people who actually understand carry needs, not cranked out by a machine in some warehouse. We've carried ourselves. We know what works and what doesn't. And we stand behind everything we make with a lifetime guarantee.

Our holsters use genuine Kydex (not cheaper polymer alternatives), quality hardware, and proper thermoforming techniques. We're not trying to be the cheapest option out there. We're trying to be the best value: something that'll last you decades and actually do its job every day.

The modularity piece is important too. We can set you up with interchangeable mounting hardware so the same holster shell works with different belt attachments. Paddle one day, belt loops the next, maybe a drop offset for duty use. One holster, multiple configurations. That's smart buying.

Choosing Your Perfect OWB Setup

So how do you actually pick the right OWB kydex holster for your needs?

Start with your use case. Are you open carrying daily? You might want Level 2 retention and don't need to worry as much about bulk. Carrying under a jacket for concealment? Focus on ride height and cant to minimize printing. Range use only? Go for comfort and easy adjustment.

Next, think about your gun. Full-size guns need different considerations than compacts. A heavy steel-frame pistol will need better weight distribution than a polymer wonder-nine.

Consider your wardrobe and body type. What works great on someone with a 32-inch waist might not work at all for someone with a 42-inch waist. How you dress matters too: business casual requires different concealment than jeans and a flannel.

And honestly, don't be afraid to reach out and ask questions. We talk to folks every day about this stuff. Hop on our chat, send us a message, whatever works. We'd rather spend five minutes helping you order the right thing than have you end up with something that doesn't meet your needs.

Check out our full line of outside the waistband holsters to see what we're building these days. Every one is made to order, backed by our guarantee, and built by people who care about this stuff.

Your carry setup is personal. Take the time to get it right, and you'll have a holster that works for you for years to come.
